Gene summary | | This gene encodes a selenoprotein containing multiple selenocysteine (Sec) residues encoded by the UGA codon that normally signals translation termination. The 3' UTR of selenoprotein genes have a common stem-loop structure, the sec insertion sequence (SECIS), that is necessary for the recognition of UGA as a Sec codon rather than as a stop signal. This selenoprotein is a secreted protein, and is unusual in that it contains 10 selenocysteine residues per polypeptide, constituting most of the selenium in plasma. It has been implicated as an extracellular antioxidant and in the transport of selenium. Several transcript variants differing in the 5' UTR, but encoding the same protein, have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq] |
